Evaluation of patient radiation doses using DAP meter in diagnostic radiology procedures in Birjand, Iran

Abstract Background The concept of diagnostic reference level (DRL) is considered a regular method to optimize radiation protection in imaging system. objective implementing for dose produce high-quality images by applying minimum based on the As Low Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate status radiology wards educational hospitals affiliated with Birjand University Medical Sciences. Methods This was performed during period 11-months center teaching hospital studied population included 477 patients who were referred as clinically indicated x-ray radiography. In order calculate local DRLs, area product (DAP) measured DAP-meter (KERMAX-plus SPD, model 120–131 HS) 11 devices at DRL values calculated 75% mean DAP distribution specific patient trial each center. Results Chest PA examination gained be range from 0.12 Gy.cm 2 0.42 Gy.cm2 an average value 0.23 which above (0.12 ) PA.
